Bagging A Bargain: Six Things to Purchase at Junior League of Knoxville’s Giant Rummage Sale

Once a year for the past 30 years, local shoppers have gotten great deals on high end items at Junior League of Knoxville (JLK)’s annual Bag-A-Bargain, a giant rummage sale. The event is back in 2017 for its 31st year and will be held at the Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park on Saturday, March 4 from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Tickets are available for $5 at the door, or $4 with a canned good or coupon book for the Knox County Schools coupon book. All proceeds from the sale benefit JLK, a local member-based non-profit women’s organization that promotes voluntarism and supports women’s safety and education. In honor of the upcoming event, here are six great things to purchase at Bag-A-Bargain.

1. Furniture

From end tables to armoires, there is always a large furniture department at Bag-A-Bargain. There is furniture for every room, including couches, headboards, chairs of all sizes, shelving, desks, dining room furniture, and even antiques. With yard-sale prices, this is a great opportunity to furnish an entire room or to grab a fun chair, a unique antique, or even a project piece.

2. Baskets and Storage Containers

Baskets are a must-have with their endless possibilities. They can be used for décor, laundry, toys, storage, gift-giving, and more. Bag-A-Bargain boasts several table of baskets each year, and they come in every size imaginable.  Since they can be expensive at retail prices, they are a great buy at yard-sale cost. Many baskets are priced at $1 or less, making it a great time to stock up on these versatile items.

3.  Name-brand Clothing

Clothing is one of the most popular departments each year at Bag-A-Bargain. Several tables piled with name-brand and designer items for men, women, and children leave shoppers with plenty of choices.  For those who don’t mind searching, great deals can be found. For the shopper looking for every day attire, athletic wear, special occasion, outerwear, and more, it’s a good time to stock up. For those with school-aged children, this is also a great time to stock up on costume-related items for all of those dress-up days that are sure to arise throughout the year. With most clothing priced at $1 per item , it’s worth a little digging to find buried treasure.

4. Books and DVDs

For book collectors, or anyone who is looking for a new read at a bargain price, this is a wonderful department. With so many categories, from self-improvement, to novels, children’s books, and more, there is something for everyone. There are also many DVDs, including children’s movies. For less than the price of one rental, shoppers can purchase a stack of DVDs to take home and enjoy.

5. Holiday and Home Decor

For anyone who enjoys a celebration, the holiday décor section will not disappoint. This is a great time to purchase trees, wreaths, dishes, seasonal items, linens, and any other necessities for a festive holiday. For the University of Tennessee enthusiast, there is also plenty of orange and white decor to celebrate a favorite local holiday- the beginning of football season in Neyland Stadium.  Several tables are dedicated to holiday and home decor, so there is something for everyone. With a keen eye and a little creativity, the possibilities are endless.

6. Dishes, Glassware, and Silver

Dishes, glassware, and silver are among the best things to purchase at Bag-A-Bargain. There is always a large selection, and each year brings unique choices. Not just for entertaining, these items can be also be used in a variety of ways around the home. Silver bowls and trays can provide beautiful decor and elegant storage while glassware can be used to create a lovely decorative display.
